With the housing market the way it is, many homeowners are opting for a home remodel rather than a move. A carefully planned and executed home remodel can give a house a brand new look and feel. In some respects, it can be like living in a new home. Here are some tips to help you decide if a home remodel is right for you
The term home remodel is actually a very broad term, and it can mean different things to different people. One the one hand, it might mean adding new carpet and paint throughout the home or it might mean tearing down walls and creating entirely new spaces. What the term means to you is something only you can decide.
Think Then Do: Before you begin tearing walls or pulling up carpet, stop. The first phase of any home remodel job should be careful planning. This is never more important than when you are considering moving walls or doing any type of demo work to the structure of the home. Unless you are an expert carpenter and know the difference between a load bearing wall and a non-load bearing wall, bring in some reliable experts.
Design Help: One of the best ways to make sure that your home remodel goes smoothly is to hire a design expert to help you draw up some plans for the new work. These experts can show you what can be done to the home and what cannot be done. They can then assist you in drawing up schematics to show the proposed renovations. The more complicated your intended remodel is, the more helpful a design expert will be to you.
Do-It-Yourself or Not: Many people go into a home remodel believing that they can do much of the work on their own. Often this is true enough. But do keep in mind that while your home remodel is going on, your home will not be the same as it was. For example, if you are replacing all of the bath tubs and showers, you may not be able to bathe for a while. The same holds true for major kitchen upgrades. If your kitchen is being torn out, where will you cook and store food?
For many homeowners time is the deciding factor on whether or not to hire a contractor to do the work. A major home remodel project takes time, and there is simply no other way to say it. If you and your spouse are working during the day, when will you be able to work on your home project? Nights? Weekends? Common sense says that working a few hours a week means the project will take much longer to complete.
The other issue is expertise. Virtually all major home remodels run into problems at some point in time. Are you experienced enough to handle those unforeseen problems? Even the day-to-day work such as wiring and plumbing can become complicated at times, not to speak of local building codes that have to be followed. And then there are permits, material deliveries, and a host of other issues that must be tended to. Hiring a reliable contractor is the answer to all of these problems.
Having your home remodeled is a great idea and a fantastic way to add value to the home, but do not take on more than you can handle. If you need the services of a contractor, find one in your area and let them do what they know how to do best.
